Musical Cycle

Musical Cycle (16x16x17) is a sculpture based on the notion of dynamic and improbable balance.  The interior square is fashioned out of three colors of dichroic glass, combined with leaded and non leaded optical crystal.  It’s cut and recut, to create refractions and reflections.  Subtle graphics of musical notes are sandblasted onto the surfaces of the dichroic slices.  They are hiding behind the brilliant color and reflective surfaces.  Dichroic glass gives off two colors, one transmitted and one reflected.  So in this case the entire spectrum is visible.  The clear exterior sections are fashioned into a circle and then polished all around.  It’s then cut into two sections, which are then refashioned with optical elements between them, to give them a dynamic sculptural shape. The narrative of this piece is about purity of color, purity of vision, music, andbalance.  Our lives need balance and this is a snapshot of how balance might happen.  The square and circle are elementary shapes, and to simplify our lives is to align ourselves with the universe’s energies.  Music is a means to doing that.  The musical symbols are playfully placed around the improbable musical bars. Becoming poised is to go within and to feel the circularity of ourselves.  This piece represents those possibilities.  That still place amongst the movement.
